Taken Captive Through Hollow & Deceptive Philosophies—Colossians 2:8
“See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ” (Colossians 2:8)
It is important to keep the main thing, the main thing and that is Christ. He is the plumb line that all other notions, ideas, philosophies and traditions should be compared and weighed. Paul goes to give the reason in the very next verse, “For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form” (vs. 9).
This is a warning for us to guard and protect the most important thing, keeping Christ at the forefront of our lives in a place where we are constantly remembering His authority and supremacy; and continually submitting to His Lordship. A tactic of the enemy to take us captive through meaningless reasoning and ritualistic customs. We are warned to be on guard.
